Reden voor deze uitspraak is haar omgang met de blessure van haar man, Rafael van der Vaart. Terwijl collega voetbalvrouw Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen zich tijdens de wedstrijd Nederland - Japan vorig jaar direct op de brancard wierp om haar geliefde Wesley Snijder te troosten nadat hij met een enkelblessure het veld moest verlaten, pakt Sylvie het totaal anders aan.
“Ach, Rafael is een heel sterke persoonlijkheid. Je zal hem niet snel horen klagen. Het zag er ook dramatischer uit dan het was. En je weet: Er zijn gewoon belangrijkere dingen in het leven. Zoals onze zoon Damián. Zo’n kind dat door het huis rent, vrolijk is en je lachend aankijkt, dáár gaat het om.” Zo vertelt Sylvie.
Over Yolanthe’s veelbesproken handeling tijdens de wedstrijd zegt Sylvie: “Iedereen is anders. Yolanthe rent op Wesley af, ik bel Raf gewoon honderd keer, haha.”
Tja, ze zal toch moeten wennen aan de term voetbalvrouw. Ze is nu eenmaal de vrouw van Rafael, daar heeft ze ook carriere mee gemaakt in Duitsland. Maar ik vind niet dat ze naar Yolanthe moet uithalen. Die is sowieso niet met haar te vergelijken…

Nee precies, ze noemt de reactie van Yolanthe en die van zichzelf nou juist als voorbeeld van het feit dat alle ‘voetbalvrouwen’ dingen op hun eigen manier doen en daarom dus niet over een kam te scheren zijn.
